The Water Operations, Shift Supervisor, is accountable for the day-to-day management of safe, environmentally-responsible, and reliable operation of the Powerhouse Offplots, Water Treatment and Flue Gas Desulphurization assets, including all aspects of front line personnel management.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Ensure that our assets are operated within defined process safety, regulatory, and reliability operating envelopes
  • Maintain a visible presence in the field to develop employee engagement and assess work process effectiveness
  • Own all process operating activities carried out by operators (unit leads, field operators, control room operators and trainees), including operator rounds, work permits, shift logs and shift handover quality
  • Ensure our maintenance work preparation is executed consistently with applicable standards and in a safe, environmentally-acceptable, and efficient manner
  • Lead troubleshooting initiatives and engage appropriate cross-functional resources to analyze and correct operational and equipment problems
  • Conduct field level risk assessments assuring our risk protocols are followed and all permitting, hazardous energy isolation, and risk mitigation processes are thoroughly conducted
  • Ensure the administration of the collective agreement and personnel policies occurs in a fair and consistent manner
  • Provide mentorship and ensure development and competency of the crew, set expectations, and hold individuals accountable
  • Work closely with the training department and the Superintendent, Water Systems Operations to ensure all operators are trained and competent in their operating areas
  • Lead effective incident investigations, implement corrective actions to prevent re-occurrences, and develop creative solutions
  • Review and update new and existing operating procedures

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of relevant industry experience including time worked as a shift engineer, unit leader or control room operator
  • Three years of operations leadership experience in utilities, water treatment, boilers, cogeneration, instrument air, and natural gas systems
  • A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Strong dedication to environmental and health and safety regulations while leading by example
  • Adaptive work style, with an ability to handle multiple priorities, challenging demands, and function in a dynamic work environment
  • Self-starter with the ability to work within timelines and exhibit strong judgment, analytical and decision making skills for complex operational issues
  • Alignment with our values: safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity

Preference for:

  • AEP Water Treatment and/or Wastewater Level 1, 2 or 3 Qualifications
  • Your 2nd Class Power Engineer’s Certification (ABSA certified); or registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Site in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a 6 days on /6 days off rotation (3 days on, 3 nights on, 6 days off; 12-hour shifts)
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
